Sedation Dentistry in Delta

Our practice offers sedation dentistry in Delta to target your pains for longer and more complicated procedures, as well as to help relieve any dental anxiety you may have. You can choose to either take a small pill an hour prior to your appointment or get nitrous oxide gas in combination with oral sedation. Although sedation is available for extensive procedures, it is not recommended for new patient examinations.

Common Types of Sedation Dentistry

There are several types of sedatives that can be used during dental procedures depending on the type of procedure and your comfort level.

  • Laughing gas or nitrous oxide is a common form of sedation used in dental offices in conjunction with other sedatives like general anesthesia. It does not put you to sleep but is effective in reducing your anxiety about any procedures taking place.
  • Oral sedation comes in the form of a pill or liquid that you take before your dental procedures take place. Again, you do not go to sleep but will feel less nervous about being at the dentist.
  • Intravenous (IV) sedation requires the sedative to be directly injected into a vein through the use of a needle. IV sedation offers a deeper sedative state where you are still awake but much less aware of the procedure taking place. After this process you will likely not remember much about your procedure and you will need recovery time before leaving your dentist’s office.
  • General anesthesia puts you to sleep for the entire dental procedure. The anesthesia is injected directly into a vein, and often requires a longer amount of recovery time afterwards.

Depending on how severe your dental anxiety is, each type of sedative can be used for different procedures. Sedation dentistry is most commonly used in Delta for procedures such as teeth extractions, wisdom teeth, root canals and cavity fillings. If you are only mildly nervous of dental treatments then laughing gas could be enough for you, but if you have severe anxiety general anesthesia may be used more frequently.
